OPC is a family of open interoperability standards from the OPC Foundation that enables secure, reliable, and vendor‑neutral data exchange across industrial devices, control systems, and enterprise software. Originating as OLE for Process Control, the classic OPC specifications standardized real-time data access, alarms and events, and historical data. The modern OPC Unified Architecture (OPC UA) extends these capabilities with a platform-independent, service-oriented design, built-in security, rich information modeling, and scalability from edge devices to cloud services. Widely used in manufacturing, energy, and other industrial sectors, OPC helps integrate PLCs, SCADA, DCS, MES/ERP, and IIoT solutions while reducing vendor lock-in.
